The region known today as Romania was under partial Serbian and Wallachian rule via Hungary's King Sigismund. He created the buffer area (Romania) to ease the Ottoman Empire's encroaching expansion north. The stone walls that were built could not keep the annual Ottoman raids at bay, and many towns were ruled by wealthy criminals that delighted in taking money for minimal protection.
